What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only FDA approved method of permanent hair removal. It involves sliding a tiny probe into a single hair follicle, and destroying the follicle by applying an electric current. At Queen Anne Medical, we use the blend method (combining the galvanic method and thermolysis).

Electrolysis can be done on any area of the body, including the face (e.g., upper lip, chin, beard), breasts, underarms, arms, legs, and genital area. We frequently provide genital electrolysis for transgender women who are preparing to undergo Gender Affirming Surgery(vaginoplasty).

Electrolysis is especially appropriate for very light-colored hair (blond, red, white, gray) that cannot be removed by laser.

Your Comfort

For some people, electrolysis can be accomplished with minimal – if any – discomfort. But others do experience pain, particularly when we are working in sensitive areas. Numbing cream can be used in any area commonly undergoing electrolysis and we can offer strong prescription strength cream applied in our office 30-60 minutes prior to your appointment at no additional charge. (Naturally, you cannot use this if you are allergic to lidocaine or other components of the cream.)

Dental blocks to numb the upper and/or lower lip are available. We also offer genital blocks (injectable anesthesia) for clients who are preparing for Gender Affirming Surgery (Vaginoplasty). We charge $75 for each dental or genital block.

If needed and if there are no medical contraindications, oral pain and/or anxiety medications can be prescribed. It is essential that you have a driver for a safe trip home.

Fees

Electrolysis fees may be covered by health insurance for preparation for Gender Affirmation Surgery. Tell us in advance of your consultation if you believe this is the case; we may be able to help you obtain pre-authorization. Otherwise, we accept cash, checks, and major credit or debit cards. Payment is due at the time of service. You may want to ask about CareCredit.
